A little about me

My name is Amber Comadira-Smith (aka Commie). By day I am a Graphic Designer; by night a Cupcake Artist. Commie's Cupcakes is the marriage of my graphic design background and my love of cupcake artistry. I am based in Gladstone, Central Queensland, Australia.

Cupcakes are often seen by the majority of people as easy and beginner material. At Commie's Cupcakes, I challenge this perception through my innovative and detailed cupcake designs. To me, cupcakes represent a challenge to be artistically creative in only a small working space (67mm diameter to be exact!). This challenging but exciting canvas has allowed me to showcase my impressive abilities and creativity to produce this exacting work. I want to show the world that cupcakes can be just as awe-inspiring as any tiered cake!

Ultimately, the biggest goal in my business is to encourage people's creativity in cake decorating. I want people to think beyond the average "cutter & mould" type designs (typically used on cupcakes) and reach into their inner creative! To achieve this goal I've developed a series of cupcake and modelling classes that inspire hobby cake decorators to think outside the box with cake decorating trends. Keep an eye out for a new list of classes in 2018!

My cupcake journey began in 2013, when I was searching for a creative outlet away from my graphic design job. Cupcake art was always something at the back of my mind that I wanted to try, and when I saw the first episode of the Great Australian Bake Off air in Australia (their cupcake episode) I immediately became hooked. My passion grew - I became obsessed and would research and brainstorm anything to do with cupcakes. I attended multiple cake and cupcake classes which helped to open my eyes to new and interesting cake decorating techniques.

In late 2015 I started my business "Commie's Cupcakes" where I was able to offer my talents to the public and further grow my career in the cake decorating industry.
